The REAL ID Act is a federal law passed by Congress after Sept. 11, 2001, that establishes specific minimum federal standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards to be accepted for certain federal purposes, like entering a federal building or boarding a domestic commercial flight. Enforcement of the REAL ID Act at the card level begins on October 1, 2020. Maryland has been REAL ID compliant since 2011.  The compliance clock is ticking.  If you plan to fly when you travel, you’ll be required to have a REAL ID certified driver’s license or ID.  Beat the rush.  Learn about REAL ID, what you need to provide, and how to schedule an appointment with the MVA to complete the REAL ID process.

The closer we get to the October 1, 2020 compliance deadline, the more people will be going to the MVA to get their REAL ID, making it more difficult for you to get your REAL ID process completed.  You can avoid the rush by gathering all of the documents you need to present to the MVA to prove your identity and making an appointment with the MVA to bring those documents in and complete the REAL ID process.  Contact your local MVA office to schedule your appointment as soon as possible.
